Chateau Rochendaal (BE)

Chateau Rochendaal was built in 1881 by Jean Henri Paul Ulens, a former lawyer. During the Nazi occupation of Belgium in WW II, the property was seized by the Germans. The castle was apparently once a temporarily home for Otto Frieze, a famous German Luftwaffe pilot who was known as the ‘Night Hunter’.

Once the Nazi’s were defeated Chateau Rochendaal became a boarding house for Belgian pilots who were training at the nearby airfields. The castle was eventually abandoned in 1996 and has stood empty since.

Visited in November 2011.
